Jaundice simply means yellowish discolouration of the skin and eyes. It is not a disease in itself but a sign that tells us there may be a disease.
It is as a result of accumulation of a substance called bilirubin in the blood.
Any age group can develop jaundice. It is not uncommon to see a new born with jaundice.
Causes include hepatitis, liver cirrhosis (scarring of the liver), blockage of bile duct, sickle cell disease and a lot more.
Symptoms and signs may include abdominal pain, itching, yellowish discolouration of the skin and eyes and others related to the cause of the jaundice.
Treatment is usually towards the underlying cause of the jaundice. It may resolve on its own.
Complications of jaundice are usually severe in infants and may affect the development of the brain.
